UCT staff awards – celebrating excellence and commitment

Dear colleagues

The University of Cape Town (UCT) Annual Staff Awards remain one of the most significant and anticipated events on our calendar. Once again, I am reminded that UCT’s greatest asset is its people. From academic staff to Professional, Administrative and Support Services (PASS) colleagues, every individual plays a vital role in shaping our collective success.

On Monday, 24 November 2025, we gathered at the Baxter Theatre to honour the dedication, excellence and commitment of our colleagues across the university. This occasion is more than a ceremony – it is a celebration of the people who make UCT the leading institution it is today. The awards reflect the values we hold dear: excellence, integrity, ubuntu and a commitment to transformation.

This year, we celebrated more than 300 staff members for their outstanding contributions. Among the highlights were the long-service awards, where we honoured colleagues who have dedicated 15, 25, 35 and even 45 years to UCT – a testament to loyalty and passion that is rare and deeply valued. We also recognised exceptional achievements in research, creative works, social responsiveness and service excellence.

Recognition is not just about accolades; it is about affirming the immense value you bring to this institution. As I said during the event, UCT’s success is not only built on rankings or any other measure – it is built on you. Your dedication and hard work enable us to overcome challenges and continue to soar as Africa’s top university.

Let us keep carrying forward the spirit of ubuntu – “I am because you are” – and continue to build an environment where everyone feels supported and empowered to thrive. Together, we can make UCT not only a source of pride for ourselves but also for our nation, continent and the world.

Thank you to all who contributed to making this event a success – from the organising teams to the performers and service providers. And thank you to each of you for your unwavering commitment to excellence and to the transformative power of education.

As we look ahead, let us remember that excellence is not a destination but a continuous journey. Every effort you make – whether in research, teaching, administration or service – contributes to shaping UCT’s future and strengthening its role as a global leader in higher education.
