In remembrance: Bongani Slatsha

14 April 2026

Dear colleagues and students,

It is with deep sadness that we share news of the passing of our colleague Bongani Slatsha (49), who passed away on Saturday, 28 March 2026.

Mr Slatsha began his journey at the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 2006, working under SuperCare Cleaning. On 1 July 2016, he was formally absorbed into the university as part of the insourcing initiative, taking up a role as a cleaner within the Campus Cleaning Services division of the Properties and Services Department (P&S). Most recently, he was assigned to the lower campus area. He was also the National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (NEHAWU) shop steward.

Colleagues described Mr Slatsha as someone who was deeply committed to his duties and consistently punctual, setting a strong example through his work ethic. He will be remembered as being very friendly, and as someone who shared his faith to uplift those around him. He will be missed by all who knew him and remembered for his kindness and willingness to assist whenever needed.

He is survived by his wife Noxolo; his children Sokhana, Aviwe and Lufefe; and his mother, Eunice Jara.

Mr Slatsha’s funeral was held in Langa, Cape Town, on Saturday, 11 April 2026.

The university has reached out to offer Mr Slatsha’s family support in this period of bereavement. We extend our sincere condolences to the family and all who knew Mr Slatsha.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
