Dear colleagues and students
In August 2025, Professor Mosa Moshabela marked his first year in office as vice-chancellor (VC) of the University of Cape Town (UCT).
Professor Moshabela took over on 1 August 2024, becoming the university's 11th VC.
In that period, the university has recorded significant milestones. These include maintaining its position as the top ranked university on the continent on all five major university rankings; climbing to 150 position globally to record its highest position in the past decade in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings; and the Ikey Tigers being crowned the 2025 FNB Varsity Cup champions.
Further highlights include UCT receiving an unqualified audit report for 2024; the introduction of the UCT AI in Education Framework; the launch of the UCT Language Policy; and the graduation of approximately 7 840 students in the Autumn 2025 and Spring 2024 ceremonies.
Under Professor Moshabela’s leadership, the university initiated the VC’s Campus-wide Conversation Series; and he recently launched Strategy 2030 to mark his first year in office.
UCT looks forward to many more milestones ahead as Professor Moshabela continues leading the university – anchored on excellence, sustainability and transformation.
