From Ikeys straight to the Boks

11 June 2025

Dear colleagues and students

One of the hallmarks of the University of Cape Town (UCT) community is exhibiting excellence in all that we do – whether in the lecture halls, research labs, sporting field or elsewhere.

One such instance worth celebrating is the recent announcement of Ntokozo Makhaza in the Springboks squad for the 2025 season – a momentous and historic achievement.

This is extraordinary as Makhaza, a student in the Faculty of Humanities and a star of our Ikey Tigers team, is yet to make his senior rugby debut. He received his first national call-up when he was included in the 54-man Springbok squad for an alignment camp in May 2025.

His selection, among a group of nine uncapped players, speaks volumes not only about his talent, but also about his character, work ethic and determination. He is the first player to transition directly from Varsity Cup rugby to the Springboks squad.

His Boks selection is also an acknowledgement of the talent within and the exceptional season our Ikey Tigers team has had this year, which culminated in them winning the Varsity Cup in April.

Beyond being synonymous with excellence as one of the three pillars of UCT’s strategic vision, Makhaza’s journey has shown that excellence is not defined by a linear path or traditional system.

He has represented UCT with distinction, helping the Ikeys to Varsity Cup glory and earning consecutive Player of the Tournament honours. Now, he stands on the cusp of representing our country on the global stage.

His story reminds us that our dreams are valid and that success is achievable when talent meets tenacity. Makhaza’s own words capture it best: “Beyond just rugby, it inspires me that hard work eventually pays off in life.”

We also recognise the broader UCT community that has played a role in this success – our dedicated sports staff, coaches, teammates and peers – all of whom have contributed to the supportive ecosystem that enables our student-athletes to thrive.

Makhaza has made UCT proud and reminded us once again of the greatness that can emerge from our campus.

We will be cheering him on with pride as he embarks on this next chapter with the Springboks. May his journey continue to inspire a new generation of dreamers at UCT and beyond.

Sincerely

Professor Mosa Moshabela
Vice-Chancellor
