In remembrance: Zola Qweta

27 May 2025

Dear colleagues and students

It is with deep sadness that we share news of the passing of our colleague, Mr Zola Qweta (42). He passed away on Saturday, 3 May 2025, following a car accident.

Mr Qweta joined the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 2016 as a gardener in the Grounds and Gardens division of the Property and Services (P&S) department. Most recently, he was assigned to the middle campus area.

His colleagues described him as someone who was youthful in spirit, always wearing a smile that brightened the day for those around him. They said his fun-loving nature, kindness and positive energy made him a joy to work with and that he was a hardworking team member. Mr Qweta was well respected and dearly loved by his colleagues.

He is survived by his wife Bongiswa; daughters Elam, Oyintanda, Michiko and Likhona; and his brothers, Amos and Patrick.

Mr Qweta’s funeral took place on Saturday, 17 May 2025 in Gatyane, Eastern Cape.

The university has reached out to offer support to Mr Qweta’s family and our sincere condolences go out to his family and all who knew and loved him during this time of bereavement.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
