27 March 2024

Dear colleagues and students

The University of Cape Town's (UCT) Centre for Extra-Mural Studies (EMS) will host a number of interesting Summer School courses between April and June 2024. The courses will cover a range of interesting subjects such as GenAI, self-publishing, and learning isiXhosa at intermediate level.

1. Self-Publishing, Step by Step

The first course, Self-Publishing, Step by Step, will commence from 3 to 24 April 2024. It will be presented via MS Teams by Daisy Jones, Lucinda Hooley and Tanya Meeson between 18:00 and 20:00 every Wednesday. The course provides a practical guide to the possibilities and pitfalls of bringing your book to life, from the first draft to the finished product.

The cost is R1 600, which is discounted to R800 for staff and students.

2. Cut To The Chase: Screenwriting

This course breaks down the essentials of writing for film, using the facilitator, Janet van Eeden’s many years of experience in lecturing and writing at various institutions. In a series of eight sessions, with practical tasks, she will unlock the world of film writing. The course will commence from 4 May to 22 June 2024. It will be presented on Saturdays from 10:00 to 12:00 via MS Teams.

3. GenAI: the good, the bad and the ugly

This webinar reviews global thinking on a variety of user-related issues, including the safety of GenAI, or AI-Chatbots as they used to be referred to. It will delve into the good, bad and ugly practices involved in the use of this technology tool.

This webinar will be presented by Professor Dan Remenyi via MS Teams on Wednesday, 17 April 2024 at 18:00. It will cost R100, discounted to R50 for staff and students, and R90 for Friends of the Summer School members.

4. Let's Write a Memoir Essay

The aim of this course is to write a memoir essay and to have fun as a creative community while writing. In a genre of its own, the memoir essay is a wonderful form that allows the writer to explore the beauty of an encapsulated memory or feeling without committing to a whole novel.

The course will be presented by Sally Cranswick via Zoom from 13 April to 10 May, on Saturdays, from 10:00 to 12:00.

5. Cederberg Excursion

The EMS has organised a unique weekend excursion with Emeritus Professor John Parkington to the Cederberg from Friday, 10 May to Sunday, 12 May 2024. The weekend will provide an immersive experience looking at rock art in situ, which will allow participants a unique insight into the lives of the San by tracing their footsteps and analysing their art and artefacts.

The price for sharing a cottage will be R3 600, while your own cottage will be R4 400. Places are limited to 20 participants.

6. Masifunde isiXhosa course at intermediate level

The course builds on the foundation you have from the beginners’ course. It is designed to improve your ability to speak, write, listen, and read the language through broadening your vocabulary, and enhancing your knowledge of structure and form in isiXhosa. This course will help you speak isiXhosa with confidence.

The cost is R2 836, which is discounted to R1 450 for staff and students. Places are limited to 20 participants.
