Amended deadlines due to Council decision on fee debt

20 February 2024

Dear students

On Wednesday, 14 February 2024 a special University of Cape Town (UCT) Council meeting approved a joint proposal submitted by management and the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) relating to the 2023 student fee debt. The joint proposal sought to address fee debt issues for students with outstanding balances above R10 000.

Since the announcement, the Fees Office has made contact with students who are eligible for this concession. Close to 400 students have been identified and informed about the requirement to submit acknowledgement of debt and, for approval, payment plans.

The university wishes to draw students’ attention to some of the relevant extended deadlines, which are as follows:

  • Deadline for students eligible for fee debt concessions to sign Acknowledgement of Debt and submit payment plans for consideration by the Fees Office: 21 February 2024.
  • Deadline for registration of undergraduate and postgraduate coursework studies: 23 February 2024.
  • Deadline for change of curriculum: 23 February 2024.

Students who are eligible for concessions are reminded that it remains their responsibility to contact course conveners to ensure that they get up to date with any missed academic activities and to also access the relevant and available faculty academic support resources.

It is important to note that the week ending Friday, 23 February 2023 is critical for students to not lose out academically as further delays will compromise the students’ ability to successfully complete their studies.
