In remembrance: Nomvuselelo Tshongoyi

21 December 2023

Dear colleagues and students

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of our colleague, Ms Nomvuselelo Tshongoyi (42), a fieldworker for the Desmond Tutu HIV Centre (DTHC) Ema Fieldworker Group in the Faculty of Health Sciences. She passed away on Tuesday, 5 December 2023 at Gatesville Melomed Hospital following a long illness.

She joined the University of Cape Town (UCT) in May 2012 as a fieldworker. Colleagues will remember Ms Tshongoyi, who they called ‘Noro’, as one of a kind. She was regarded as the best recruiter and retainer who performed her duties with diligence. Her colleagues described her as someone who would pick up research participants from areas that some of them wouldn’t think of. She had her way of communicating with participants, making sure that they were in the study until it was done. She respected and loved working with study coordinators.

Ms Tshongoyi had an amazing sense of communication and would take note of the smallest detail. Colleagues said they have lost one of the high performing staff members.

She is survived by her son Alizwa and her extended family. She was laid to rest on Thursday, 21 December 2023 in Nyanga, Cape Town.

The university has reached out to offer support to the Tshongoyi family and our sincere condolences go out to them and all who knew and loved her.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
