In Remembrance: Khoro Makhesha

08 June 2023

Dear students and colleagues

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of our colleague and student Mr Khoro Makhesha (28), a teaching assistant in the Department of Commercial Law, during the week which ended on Friday, 26 May 2023. Mr Makhesha was also enrolled for a Master of Laws (LLM) in Tax Law degree at the University of Cape Town (UCT) at the time of his passing.

Mr Makhesha joined UCT in 2014 where he completed his Bachelor of Social Sciences in Political Studies and International Relations and his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree. He was an academically strong student. He worked as a tutor at UCT in 2017, and then went on to serve as intern for the Competition Commission of South Africa, after which he was a candidate attorney for Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyer Inc from 2020 to 2022.

In January 2022, Mr Makhesha joined the Department of Commercial Law as an undergraduate teaching assistant. The department experienced Mr Makhesha as an intelligent, inquisitive, friendly, respectful, cheerful and helpful colleague. He was kind, warm, and worked incredibly hard as a student. His law lecturers note that “he was often by far the most well-prepared student in the LLB and LLM class”. He has been described as a young man of immense potential. He was also a keen runner who completed the Comrades Marathon in 2022 and more recently the Two Oceans Marathon.

Mr Makhesha is survived by his parents, Patrick and Lizzie; his two brothers, Opy and Bindu; and his sister, Mudzuli.

The Faculty of Law held a memorial service for Mr Makhesha on Tuesday, 30 May 2023. The funeral took place on Saturday, 3 June in Johannesburg.

The university has reached out to offer support to the Makhesha family and our sincere condolences go out to them and all who knew and loved him during this time of bereavement.
