In Remembrance: Leonard Carl Krieger

08 September 2022

Dear colleagues and students

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of our colleague, Mr Leonard Carl Krieger (57), on 25 August 2022.

Mr Krieger, who was a library assistant at the Chancellor Oppenheimer Library, joined the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 1989. In recent years, his health deteriorated after a long battle with complications from diabetes. Subsequently, he went on disability leave in June 2021.

Colleagues have paid tribute to him as a quiet and soft-spoken person. They remember him as someone who seemed to be reserved until you got into conversation with him and then he would surprise you with stories of his experiences at UCT Libraries and his personal life. He loved to read and have thoughtful conversations on any topic.

Years ago, when UCT Libraries played five-a-side football, Mr Krieger was an outstanding goalkeeper for the team and his club, Crusaders. He was a good friend and a long-time colleague. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him and worked with him.

Mr Krieger leaves behind his mother, and his wife Tracy.

His funeral was held on Thursday, 1 September 2022 in Grassy Park, Cape Town.

The university has reached out to offer support to Mr Krieger’s family and our heartfelt condolences go out to them and all who knew our late colleague.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
