In Remembrance: Dyhaan Omar

16 August 2022

Dear colleagues and students

Our hearts are heavy as we write to inform you of the passing of our student, Dyhaan Omar (19), on 4 July 2022 following a short illness.

Dyhaan, who was a first-year student studying towards a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in media and writing, was diagnosed with leukaemia in May 2022 and sadly left us a few months later.

He has been described as an incredibly talented soul and, in addition to his studies, he was a professional model, influencer and a member of the University of Cape Town (UCT) Radio team. Although he was still fairly new to the team, the UCT radio management remembers him as a confident, friendly and well-spoken person.

His loss is felt by many who knew, loved and interacted with him. They remember him as a beautiful person who was kind, strong and had a beautiful heart.

Dyhaan is survived by his mother, Anthea.

He was laid to rest in Ottery, Cape Town in July.

The university has reached out to offer support to Dyhaan’s family, and our heartfelt condolences go out to them all who knew him.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
