In remembrance: Zanethemba Mpumelelo Mapundu

12 May 2022

Dear colleagues and students

It is with heartfelt sympathy that we inform you of the passing of our colleague, Mr Zanethemba Mpumelelo Mapundu (32), in a car accident on Wednesday, 27 April 2022.

Mr Mapundu, who rejoined the University of Cape Town (UCT) in May 2021, worked in the Department of Student Affairs as the Senior Coordinator: Financial Aid Client Services.

His colleagues will fondly remember him as a kind, gentle and caring person. He loved serving in financial aid, having done so for close to 10 years at UCT and other institutions.

His passion for serving and assisting students, while also showing that same compassion to his colleagues, is what made him so special. Similarly, his presence was felt in his engagement with other areas of the university.

“We mourn the loss of this special soul, whose light shone brightly wherever he went,” said Tasneem Salasa, Director of Student Financial Aid.

Mr Mapundu is survived by his mother, siblings and two children.

His funeral was held on Saturday, 7 May 2022 in Sithebe village, Eastern Cape.

The university has contacted the Mapundu family to offer support during this difficult time. Our sincere condolences go out to them and all who knew and loved him.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
