In remembrance: Adri Winkler

09 May 2022

Dear colleagues and students

We are deeply saddened to inform you of the passing of our colleague, Ms Adri Winkler (63), on Friday, 29 April 2022.

Ms Winkler joined the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 1998 as a faculty officer in the Faculty of Health Sciences. She was promoted to postgraduate academic manager in the Faculty Academic Administration Office in 2005. In this role, she made a critical contribution to the faculty, managing the postgraduate portfolio.

Known for her compassion, she gave of herself willingly, especially in the care of postgraduate students. Ms Winkler worked closely with postgraduate student administration colleagues in UCT’s central finance team.

Colleagues remember her as a great nurturer and mentor to the students and the team she managed very closely. She was a great storyteller with a dry sense of humour. Many students and colleagues have spoken fondly of how she touched their lives.

She is survived by her husband Walter, sister Sonia Vermaak and her extended family.

Ms Winkler was buried on Friday, 6 May in Tygerdal, Cape Town.

The faculty will host a memorial service together with the family on Tuesday, 10 May 2022 at the New Learning Centre Lecture Theatre at 15:00. Further details will be communicated by the faculty in due course.

A book of condolence will be opened in the foyer of the faculty at the Barnard Fuller Building for those who wish to leave a message to be passed on to the family. In addition, a virtual space is available for similar notes in recognition of this life of service.

The university has reached out to offer support to the Winkler family and during this time of bereavement our sincere condolences go out to them and all who knew and loved Ms Winkler.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
