In remembrance: Khanya Booi

08 April 2021

Dear colleagues and students

We are extremely saddened to share the news of the passing of our student, Mr Khanya Booi (20), on 25 March 2021.

Mr Booi was in his third year of study towards his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees in the Faculty of Health Sciences. He was a quiet and reserved soul who enjoyed time to himself. Those who knew him described him as a brilliant student who will be remembered by all who interacted with him for his kind, humble and patient nature.

Mr Booi is survived by his mother, Ntombomzi Booi; father, Charles Gyekye; and siblings, Lwando and Chuma Booi and Irene, Martina and Yongama Gyekye.

An online memorial service was held by the Faculty of Health Sciences on Tuesday, 6 April.

Mr Booi will be laid to rest on Saturday, 10 April in Engcobo, Eastern Cape.

The university has been in contact with the Booi family and has reached out to offer support during this time of sorrow. Our thoughts are with everyone who is mourning the loss of the bright, young man that Mr Booi was.

Members of the UCT community who require support during this difficult period can contact the Student Wellness Service or the Human Resources department.

We apologise for the delay in this notice. A number of factors caused the delay including engaging with the grieving family of Mr Booi.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
