In remembrance: Zoleka Helesi

15 December 2020

Dear colleagues and students

We are deeply saddened to inform you of the death of our colleague, Ms Zoleka Caroline Helesi (48), who was coordinator for the Baxter’s Zabalaza Theatre Festival and an award-winning actress. Ms Helesi passed away on Friday, 11 December 2020, after battling cancer.

She will be missed by her family, Baxter theatre colleagues and friends, and all the many people and communities whom she touched widely throughout her life.

“I feel like a small part of my soul has died with her and a terrific era at the Baxter Theatre has now ended. I can only hope and pray that the memory of her indomitable spirit will heal all who loved her so very much,” said Lara Foot, CEO and artistic director of the Baxter and close friend of Ms Helesi.

A small gathering of remembrance will be held at the Baxter on 15 December 2020 at 15:00.

Ms Helesi is survived by her son Lazola, sister Thembisa, and her nieces and nephews.

The Baxter Theatre and the University of Cape Town are in touch with and supporting the family through this very difficult time. We convey our deepest condolences to the Helesi family and everyone affected by her untimely passing.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
