In remembrance: Simamkele Gocini

28 September 2020

Dear students and colleagues

It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of our dear student, Mr Simamkele Gocini (23), a BSc student majoring in Business Computing. Mr Gocini died tragically after being gunned down in front of his home on Sunday, 16 August 2020. He was laid to rest on 23 August 2020 in eMtyhintyini, Cofimvaba, in the Eastern Cape.

The office of the Dean of the Faculty of Science has expressed shock at the death of Mr Gocini. “It is always hard when a young person dies, and when those circumstances are harsh, it is even more difficult to bear. Simamkele struggled hard with many challenges, but he showed huge determination in continuing to strive towards his goal of getting a BSc degree. He will be remembered for that tenacity and determination, and we are sure he has made a mark on many students and members of his community. We wish his family great strength as they mourn his loss, and hope that his life will inspire them to achieve their dreams and aspirations.”

Mr Gocini was a coach with Numeric, which helps young South Africans excel in mathematics by creating exciting and high impact learning environments in low-income areas with a view to helping learners in Grade 7 establish strong foundations in mathematics and developing the next generation of well-equipped and passionate teachers.

The university has reached out to offer support to the Gocini family. We convey our heartfelt condolences to Mr Gocini’s family, friends and all who knew him. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time of grief.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
