In remembrance: Bongiwe Vazana

19 December 2019 | The UCT Executive

Dear colleagues and students

It is with great sadness that we write to inform you of the unexpected death of Miss Bongiwe Vazana (44) who passed away suddenly on Wednesday, 11 December.

Miss Vazana joined the South African Tuberculosis Vaccine Initiative (SATVI) as a clinical research worker at the Worcester field site in January 2008.

Her friends and colleagues will remember her as a single mother who was devoted to her children. She was dedicated to her work in tuberculosis (TB) research and to helping relieve the burden of TB in our community. A friendly and approachable person, she knew her community well and was always willing to assist clinic staff in motivating TB patients to improve their treatment adherence.

Miss Vazana is survived by her sister, Mandisa Vazana-Eze, her children Mayanda and Ayakha, and her nieces Kanyisile and Mbali.

The funeral will take place at 10:00 on Saturday, 21 December, at the Vusisiswe High School Hall in Worcester.

The university has reached out to offer support to the Vazana family, and our heartfelt condolences go out to them and all who knew Miss Vazana.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
