In remembrance: Garth van Niekerk

08 November 2017 | From the VC's Desk

Dear students and colleagues

It is with great sadness that I write to notify you of the death of Mr Garth van Niekerk (28). He passed away in the early hours of Saturday, 4 November 2017, after a rapid progression of cancer, which was diagnosed just over two months ago.

He had just completed all the requirements towards his MPhil in Emergency Medicine.

Mr Van Niekerk had been working in the Middle East as a flight paramedic for Abu Dhabi Aviation Search and Rescue while completing his studies.

His colleagues and friends have described him as a class act, a gifted colleague and one of the best paramedics. They further added that he was a very humble person who will be sorely missed by a lot of people.

Mr Van Niekerk is survived by his parents, Johan and Anita, and his sister, Gabrielle. His sister will receive his MPhil degree on his behalf at the graduation ceremony scheduled for 20 December.

His memorial service will be held on Friday, 10 November, at the King’s School in Randburg.

We convey our deepest condolences to Mr Van Niekerk’s family, friends and all who knew him.

Sincerely

Dr Max Price
Vice-Chancellor
