Dear students and colleagues

This campus announcement aims to inform members of the University of Cape Town community about:

1. VC’s Open Lecture on “Trump, Brexit and Globalisation”

The Right Honourable Lord Peter Hain of Neath, a well-known anti-apartheid campaigner, facilitator of the Northern Ireland peace process and former Member of Parliament, will present the 2017 Vice-Chancellor’s Open Lecture, which is titled “Trump, Brexit and Globalisation”. The lecture will take place on Monday, 24 July 2017, at 18:00 at the New Lecture Theatre, University Avenue South, Upper Campus. For those who are unable to attend, the lecture will be recorded and shared on the UCT website.


2. Successful conclusion of the July graduation

The university held three graduation ceremonies on 14 July. A total of 1 112 students graduated, including 103 doctoral and 539 master’s degrees. The speaker at the morning ceremony, well-known social activist Zackie Achmat, was awarded an honorary doctorate. The speaker at the afternoon ceremony was Nedbank Group Executive Ciko Thomas.


3. Call for suggestions on cost-saving measures

As suggested at a faculty board meeting, a central repository has been set up to receive suggestions from the UCT community on cost savings and increased efficiency at the institution. All staff members and students are encouraged to email their suggestions. Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Daya Reddy will be responsible for arranging responses to suggestions.


4. Mid-year exams concluded

Mid-year exams, which started on Wednesday, 28 June 2017, were successfully concluded on Friday, 14 July 2017. A total of 16 430 students sat for exams.
