Fire in residence room at Leo Marquard residence

Dear colleagues and students,

We are writing to share information with you regarding an incident earlier this morning at Leo Marquard residence.

Students from the Leo Marquard residence at UCT's Lower Campus were evacuated after a small fire broke out in one of the residence rooms on the 10th floor in the early hours of this morning. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

One student has been hospitalised as a result of smoke inhalation. The student's parents have been notified and UCT staff are assisting the family. Some students from the residence may require alternative accommodation while repairs will be carried out as quickly as possible in the area of the building affected. Counselling support has been arranged for students who have been affected by this incident.
