Chair of UCT Council Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane's "unwavering commitment" to a better world has earned him this year's Drivers of Change Award. The honour recognises individuals or organisations in Southern Africa who are making an impact on the lives of the poor through the development and implementation of effective public policies and strategies to overcome poverty. The award is presented by the Southern Africa Trust in conjuction with the Mail & Guardian newspaper. Through his African Monitor initiative, he is pushing rich countries to meet their commitments to the poor in Africa, while also working to ensure that the aid actually benefits the poor. Ndungane has recently been asked by the South African government to champion the restoration of historic schools.
