Mingling: Ernie Stempel and his wife, Brendalyn, as well as Vice-Chancellor and Principal Prof Njabulo S Ndebele, met the students benefiting from the Starr Foundation

Trustees of the Starr Foundation, Ernie Stempel and his wife, Brendalyn, mingled with some of the student beneficiaries of their sponsorship at UCT at an annual Starr Donor Recognition lunch this week.

The Bermuda-based couple joked and laughed with students, as well as Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Njabulo S Ndebele.

"I'm pleased to come here. UCT is a wonderful institution," Stempel told them. The former chairman of the American International Group said he was proud of the university's reputation and the students' achievements. "It is wonderful to see that the student body is well balanced in all respects."

Mrs Stempel, a UCT alumnus, added that even though they divide their time primarily between Bermuda and the US, their hearts are in South Africa, which is why they bring their money and generosity here.

The couple's "long-lasting support" was lauded by Prof Ndebele, who also said he was delighted that the students were not just statistics "but you have interacted with them".
