New CEO for Groote Schuur

13 November 2007 | Story by Newsroom

UCT alumnus Saadiq Kariem has been appointed as the new CEO of Groote Schuur Hospital.

Kariem, a UCT medical graduate, has served as the hospital's chief operating officer for nearly three years, is a public health specialist, a former head of the Western Cape's AIDS programme and has been involved in health policy formulation on local, provincial and national levels.

His first goal, he says, is to bring stability to the organisation and "maintain the public's confidence" in the Western Cape's premier teaching hospital.

"We will still deliver the excellent high-quality health care that people have become accustomed to," he said.

His appointment follows the departure of former Groote Schuur CEO Japie du Toit.
