New faces for school of Languages and Literatures

06 March 2006

Returnee: Clara Tilve of UCT's Spanish Studies section.

The School of Languages and Literatures have made some critical appointments over recent months. Thanks to funding from the Italian and Spanish embassies, Dr Federico Della Corte joins the Italian Studies section, while Clara Tilve takes over the teaching in the school's budding Spanish programme. With support from the Portuguese ambassador, Dott Paulo Barbosa, and the Instituto Camoes, the school has also launched a course in Initial Portuguese this year, and has appointed Aurelio Simango to get that initiative off the ground. It's Della Corte's first time in South Africa, while Simango studied at UCT in 2000. South Africa is second home, though, to Tilve. She was born in Germiston to a Spanish father and Columbian mother, and lived there for the first 14 years of her life before moving with her family to Spain. She did Spanish and English studies at the University of Alicante, lessons she's now keen to pass on to South African students.
