UCT stars among jazz greats

05 April 2004

All that jazz: UCT will be well-represented at the North Sea Jazz Festival that takes place at the Cape Town Convention Centre over the Easter weekend when the DA Band performs. Led by Professor Daryl Andrews of the College of Music, the DA Band features mainly UCT final-year, honour's and master's students. Best known for the energetic performances of rhythmical Cuban music, the band is one of few local acts to be featured in the line-up. Members of the band include David Cousins on piano, Shaun Johannes on bass, Mike Horne on drums, Daniel Boem on percussion, Kelly Bell on trombone, Vaughn French and Alex Gibbons, both playing trumpets, Miso Markovina on baritone sax and flutes, with Daniel Shout on alto and soprano sax and Simon Bates playing the tenor sax. Vocals belong to Lindiwe Maxolo and TJ Simon.
