Launch of Irma Stern in the Congo exhibition

23 September 2002
TO CELEBRATE Heritage Day tomorrow (September 24) the UCT Irma Stern Museum, with the participation of Iziko Museums, will host an open day to launch the Irma Stern in the Congo exhibition.

According to Museum Director and Curator Christopher Peter, there will be a special tribute to the Museum's highly prized Buli caryatid stool, which is the jewel of the Congo Collection and one of South Africa's most important artworks. Professor Sandra Klopper from the University of Stellenbosch will speak briefly on the stool and the Souvenir Classical Dancers from Rwanda will perform between 12h00 and 14h00.

A garment made of African wax print by Vlisco will be modelled and sold to benefit Tusi Mame Wana Wake, an organisation of refugee women in South Africa. The exhibition runs until October 5.
