Invite: UCT to host cutting edge human genetics research forum
The African Society of Human Genetics (AfSHG) in partnership with the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Division of Human Genetic, Department of Pathology and the Wellcome Connecting Sciences Global Training Programme , is hosting a Young Investigators Research Forum (YIF) in human genetics where researchers in these fields from around the world will present their cutting-edge research as oral presentations and poster presentations.

Breast cancer project provides lifeline for patients by fast-tracking treatment
A cancer project established to plug the gap by providing hope and care to cancer patients finding themselves in long public healthcare system queues, provides a life-saving service with a catch-up surgery programme that operates on Saturdays when theatre spaces are normally not used at Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH). Clinicians are also providing their services pro bono.

Access to vital form of contraception received by only 50% of women in Cape Town health facilities
Many women receiving antenatal care in public health services in Cape Town choose bilateral tubal ligation as their preferred method of postpartum contraception during their antenatal course. If the sterilisation does not occur immediately, these women are discharged on an alternative form of contraception and, ideally, an interval date for bilateral tubal ligation is arranged.

Peri-urban Cape Town youth with HIV face social challenges contributing to increased risk of obesity
More than two fifths (41%) of adolescents and youth living with HIV (AYLHIV) across peri-urban Cape Town were found to have abdominal obesity, compared to rates for young people in the general South African population (13.7–22.1%). Various factors ranging from the food and built environment, community, family and individual level factors were found to be associated with abdominal obesity in this population.

The University of Cape Town (UCT) aims to help the workforce obtain relevant skills by expanding its more than 200 executive education short courses and open up further opportunities for study to school-leavers and recent graduates, as well as to drive continuous development among working professionals.

Extensive travel and time away from home, different formats, and constant pressure to improve match statistics. The demands and challenges within cricket expose players to the risk of mental-ill health – specifically, anxiety and depression.

New digital tools to enable UCT scientists prepare for malaria outbreaks in southern Africa
The Wellcome foundation has provided approximately R487-million to support global research to address urgent health threats brought about by climate change. This funding provides for 24 research teams in 12 countries around the world to develop innovative digital tools to model the relationship between climate change and infectious disease.

An academic by day and actress by night - finance lecturer gets full professorship
To most people, drama and accounting may seem like two poles at opposite ends of the academic spectrum. However, for Professor Gizelle Willows the pursuit of both these passions has led to finding a niche in behavioural finance as well as attaining a number of career highlights. Most recently, she was promoted ad hominem to full professor at the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) College of Accounting.

UCT sets its sights on conquering cancer
Despite being on the brink of elimination, more than 600 000 women develop cervical cancer each year. Of that number, 300 000 are lost to the disease. This loss of life has innumerable repercussions for both the women’s families and their communities, leading not only to a breakdown of the family unit but also spiralling cycles of poverty.

As a writer and poet Tatamkhulu Afrika’s work won many accolades. And yet his contributions to South African literature have been largely neglected, if not forgotten, said Dr Halim Gençoğlu, a University of Cape Town (UCT) Ottoman scholar and research fellow in the Department of Sociology’s Re-Centring Afro Asia Project .
