UCT symposium charts a future towards inclusive economies through intersectoral collaboration
Disability prevalence is estimated at 16% in South Africa and rising. It is estimated that nine out of 10 persons with disabilities eligible for work are unemployed in South Africa. As of August 2023, according to the Department of Labour, of 7 215 960 employees, only 1,2% are persons with disabilities.

Poor service delivery, aging infrastructure under the spotlight at UCT’s first National Infrastructure Hackathon
The University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Department of Civil Engineering recently hosted the first National Infrastructure Hackathon. The hackathon, held under the theme “Constructing Tomorrow: Public Infrastructure Policy Dialogue & Research Excellence”, attracted executives from infrastructure departments and waterboards, academic staff, final-year civil engineering students, postgraduate students, municipal engineers, professional associations and private-sector engineering consultants and contractors.

In a powerful testament to its commitment to global health innovation, the University of Cape Town (UCT), through its renowned Holistic Drug Discovery and Development (H3D) Centre , has joined forces with LifeArc , a leading medical research charity, to launch the Centre for Translational AMR Research (CTAR) Programme. This landmark collaboration, backed by a substantial GBP 5 million investment from LifeArc, aims to address the escalating threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which disproportionately impacts low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), including many across Africa.

Study shows 10% of children in high-burden TB settings may develop the disease by age 10
A groundbreaking study by researchers from the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Department of Paediatrics and Child Health , Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH), and the University of São Paulo, has revealed a critical gap in understanding the risk of tuberculosis (TB) in children. The researchers found that there was a high risk of TB infection and disease in children up to 10 years old who lived in areas where TB spread was common. The findings are published in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health .

SA’s income inequality remains high, but middle and upper class growth offers hope – UCT report
South Africa’s middle and upper classes are growing and becoming more economically inclusive, but challenges remain. The latest report from the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Liberty Institute of Strategic Marketing , titled “Social Mobility in South Africa,” revealed that while the middle and upper classes are expanding, they are also becoming more racially and economically diverse. However, millions of South Africans continue to face poverty, with over 17 million citizens living in households earning less than R3 500 per month.
