Landmark global summit advances commitment to social justice in open access publishing
The University of Cape Town (UCT) Libraries, in collaboration with global partners, recently hosted the second Global Summit on Diamond Open Access (DOA), advancing a movement committed to equitable knowledge dissemination. Building on the momentum of the inaugural summit in Toluca, Mexico, this edition placed social justice at the heart of DOA, emphasising the development of an inclusive, bias-free publishing ecosystem.

UCT lecture to address institutional racism in higher education
Professor Shose Kessi, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Cape Town (UCT), will deliver the first lecture of the year in the UCT Inaugural Lecture series on Wednesday, 19 March 2025. The lecture is titled “S#*t happens. A Decolonial Feminist Psychological Reflection on Institutional Racism in Higher Education”.

UCT study finds high prevalence of critical illness in African hospitals
One in eight hospital in-patients (12.5%) are critically ill in Africa, according to a new study by researchers from the University of Cape Town (UCT) in collaboration with international partners. Of these, one in five (21%) die within seven days, compared to 2.7% of patients who are not critically ill.

UCT contributes to groundbreaking discovery of cosmic beast by MeerKAT telescope
The University of Cape Town (UCT) researchers and South Africa’s MeerKAT radio telescope have made a monumental discovery of a rare giant radio galaxy, “Inkathazo,” helping astronomers further understand the largest structures in the universe. This groundbreaking study , published on Monday, 20 January 2025 in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society , features contributions from researchers and scientists worldwide.
