UCT drug discovery trailblazer honoured among innovative black biotech leaders
Professor Kelly Chibale, the founder and director of the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Drug Discovery and Development Centre (H3D), has been named among 22 rising black biotech leaders in the Timmerman Report , published in the United States (US). Professor Chibale is the only Africa‑based scientist included in the group.

Western Cape Government recognises UCT occupational health specialist with service excellence award
Dr Itumeleng Ntatamala, occupational medicine specialist and senior lecturer at the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Faculty of Health Sciences, was recently awarded silver in the category ‘Inspirational Support Employee’ in the Western Cape Government’s (WCG) 2020 Service Excellence Awards.

UCT introduces new law and leadership scholarship
The Everard and Joan MacFarlane Family Leadership Scholarship for University of Cape Town (UCT) law students was launched recently. More than just a funding grant, the R15 million endowment aims to support students who display both academic excellence and leadership skills, through a holistic faculty‑based programme.

UCT student crowned canoe ocean racing world champion
University of Cape Town (UCT) master’s student Nicholas Notten won the Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships that were held in Lanzarote, Spain, from 4 to 6 July 2021. The world championships drew more than 250 competitors across multiple divisions from juniors up to masters from over 20 countries.

Infants born to HIV-positive mothers more likely to require ICU admission, study finds
A new study from the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Centre for Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Research shows that HIV-negative infants born to HIV-positive mothers who are on antiretroviral treatment (ART) are more likely to require intensive care unit (ICU) admission.

African women of childbearing age with diabetes at high risk of cardiovascular disease
New research by the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) PhD graduate in Medicine, Tawanda Chivese, found that one in every 11 African women of childbearing age had type 2 diabetes and were at high risk of cardiovascular disease.

Doctoral graduate explores an imbalance of power in rehabilitation services for the blind
University of Cape Town (UCT) PhD graduate Michelle Botha investigated what meanings about blindness and blind persons are produced and perpetuated by rehabilitation service organisations in her doctoral thesis, “Blindness, rehabilitation and identity: A critical investigation of discourses of rehabilitation in South African non-profit organisations for visually impaired persons”.

Exceptional dedication to violence prevention wins researcher prestigious UCT vice-chancellor award
Growing up during apartheid, Professor Cathy Ward became aware of the systemic nature of violence in South Africa and its devastating effects on society at a young age. This sparked her interest in research around violence prevention and has led to the creation of Parenting for Lifelong Health, an evidence-based, non-commercialised suite of programmes dealing with conflict in the home. Her exceptional dedication to violence prevention has been recognised with the 2020 University of Cape Town (UCT) Alan Pifer Award.

Largest global sickle cell disease patient registry advances healthcare and quality of life
Approximately 400 986 babies are born with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) globally per year, with almost 75% of these births in Africa. Despite this high incidence resulting in high mortality rates, there are currently no effective SCD-focused public health programmes in most African countries.
