UCT researchers pioneering research into hearing impairments in sub-Saharan Africa
University of Cape Town (UCT) academics in partnership with their counterparts in Cameroon, Ghana and Mali are working on genomic research which aims to find the genes that cause hearing impairment in people from Africa and to better understand how these genes affect hearing in African populations.

UCT and partners develop test that diagnoses TB Meningitis within 2 hours
The University of Cape Town, in partnership with Antrum Biotech, have developed a new rapid test that is able to diagnose TB meningitis - a major cause of death in Southern Africa - within 2 hours. The test is currently undergoing validation to enter the global market.

For many students new textbooks are excessively expensive, while second-hand books can be hard to find. University of Cape Town (UCT) student Tamir Shklaz is making the process easier and more convenient with his digital platform Quillo, which connects buyers and sellers of second-hand university textbooks.

South Africa is known for having the highest income inequality in the world. This is talked about a lot, but the country doesn't appear to be any closer to finding a solution. If anything, because inequality is such a big part of people's lived reality every minute of every day, some of its most distinctive features appear to have been internalised and normalised in society.

UCT statement in relation to false allegations made on social media about the finances of the Faculty of Law
The University of Cape Town (UCT) has taken note of the recent social media posts that make very serious allegations about the financial management of the UCT Faculty of Law. The allegations include claims of fraud and other impropriety, and specifically include claims that the former dean of the faculty, Professor Penelope Andrews, was involved in this inappropriate activity. The posts also included parts of financial statements from the faculty, claiming that these were evidence of fraudulent behaviour and that this caused the institution to force Professor Andrews to resign.

UCT establishes first South African extraordinary unit to probe problems of antibiotic resistance
A new multi-disciplinary unit has been established at the University of Cape Town (UCT) to address the origins and effects of antimicrobial resistance and to develop potential preventative strategies. It is the first South African unit dedicated to studying the origin, development and fundamental drivers of antimicrobial resistance and multidrug-resistant pathogens (bacteria, viruses, or other microorganisms that cause diseases).
