Media conference: UCT providing redress through science
In 2018, the University of Cape Town announced that it had 11 skeletons in its human remains collection that were found to have been unethically obtained by the institution in the 1920s. Nine of these individuals were brought to UCT in the 1920s from Sutherland in the Northern Cape. UCT commenced a restitution process for the nine sacred remains.

University of Cape Town Vice-Chancellor Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng has wished the class of 2019 matriculants well for their examinations. This year, 790 405 matriculants will sit for their exams, which started today.

A study in African women sheds new light on barriers to a cure for HIV
An international, collaborative study led by University of Cape Town (UCT) researchers has revealed an unexpected finding that could lead to better therapies towards reducing the HIV reservoir, a major barrier to developing a cure for HIV. The reservoir consists of viral DNA that survives hidden in the body even after indefinite treatment with antiretrovirals.

Long-term success rates for kidney transplants between HIV positive donor and recipient
South Africa has one of the highest incidences of people living with HIV in the world with over seven million people living with the disease. Thus, a new study which has found that survival rates between an HIV positive donor and an HIV positive recipient shows long-term success is positive news for the country.

Most plastic dumped at sea doesn't come from land-based sources, UCT study finds
New research led by the University of Cape Town has cast doubt on the widely held assumption that most marine plastic comes from land-based sources, but rather that a significant proportion come from ships dumping their litter at sea in contravention of international law.

UCT academics promote women in science at international event
Soapbox Science - a novel public outreach platform for promoting women scientists and the science they do - will come to South Africa for the first time this month. The Pierhead at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town will be transformed into an arena for learning and debate, engaging people from all walks of life with some of the South Africa's most ground-breaking scientific research on 28 September 2019.

African scientists contribute in efforts to reduce Africa's high disease burden
The World Bank estimates that Africa's disease burden stands at 25% of the global figure. In efforts to reduce this burden, up to 300 African scientists are converging in Accra, Ghana, this week. They will map out progress of a multi-million, multi-country and multi-year genomic research programme to increase understanding of how human genes and the environment are contributing to Africa's increased susceptibility to disease.

UCT professor to be honoured with prestigious award by Emperor of Japan at special ceremony
University of Cape Town (UCT) applied mathematician and fisheries scientist Emeritus Professor Doug Butterworth will be awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon by the Emperor of Japan for his contribution to the sustainable management of the country's fisheries, in particular southern bluefin tuna, one of the world's most valuable fisheries.
