UCT retains excellence in the education of professional accountants
The University of Cape Town (UCT) has retained its excellence in the education of professional accountants through the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) Initial Test of Competence (ITC) results announced on Friday, 31 March 2023. This came at the end of a week of celebrating excellence at the university’s graduation ceremonies.

Special COVID-19 grants not only provided income relief – they also improved labour market outcomes
The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant was the first in South Africa to target unemployed adults. Its main aim was to provide income support in a time of the crisis precipitated by the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown. But for the first time, new research has shown that it also played a key role in improving labour market outcomes for recipients.

In the acknowledgements that preface her highly praised thesis on a novel human urine treatment to make liquid fertiliser, Caitlin names many whose support lit her way. And among them is a dog called Ralph.

R2m partnership to strengthen capacity in cleft surgery for sub-Saharan Africa
About 4.6 million people in the world live with an unrepaired or inadequately repaired cleft, according to a 2022 study by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington in the USA. These individuals are at risk of malnutrition, death from malnutrition, speech and language difficulties, and bullying and ostracisation.

A fully isolated dwarf galaxy unexpectedly affected by ram pressure
Dwarf galaxies are known to be pristine probes of the early Universe, especially when they are isolated and not interacting with massive galaxies. Observations with the MeerKAT radio telescope of WLM, an archetype of such a galaxy, have revealed its strong interaction with the intergalactic medium.

A new international study co-authored by a University of Cape Town (UCT) endocrinologist found that people with diabetes and cognitive impairment are at high risk of heart disease. The findings are published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism .

COVID-19 vaccine mandates are working, UCT survey finds
A COVID-19 Vaccine Survey (CVACS) 2 by the Southern Africa Labour and Development Research Unit (SALDRU) at the University of Cape Town (UCT) , led by Dr Brendan Maughan-Brown and Dr Katherine Eyal, has found that vaccine hesitancy is becoming entrenched among a sample of unvaccinated South Africans, with few believing that the vaccine is needed, or that it is effective.

UCT and Queen Mary University of London team awarded R52 million funding to boost life-saving surgery research in Africa
A team of University of Cape Town (UCT) and Queen Mary University of London researchers have successfully secured almost £3 million (R52 million) in funding for a new research programme that will establish centres of research excellence in four African countries with the aim of saving the lives of patients who undergo life-saving surgery.

UCT public health expert gets top varsity award for human rights
“While our post-1994 democracy has removed formal race discrimination from the statute book and ushered in a constitutional dispensation that prioritises human rights across our society, we still see the consequences of inequality and discrimination today.” This reality has driven the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Professor Leslie London, the head of the Division of Public Health Medicine based in the School of Public Health and Family Medicine in UCT’s Faculty of Health Sciences, to change the status quo and make his own contribution towards achieving social justice in healthcare.

The University of Cape Town (UCT) has moved from 10th to 9th in the world and is among the top 100 institutions for a further four subjects. This is according to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject 2022, released earlier this month.
