Dear colleagues and students
The University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), in partnership with the Bongani Mayosi Foundation, will host the next Bongani Mayosi Memorial Lecture on Friday, 23 January 2026. The lecture will be delivered by Dr Lehana Thabane, professor in the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence and Impact at McMaster University in Canada. He will speak on the theme “Fostering evidence-based humanity in the academy and beyond”.
Professor Mayosi was one of the leading South African cardiologists, an A-rated National Research Foundation scholar, and former dean of the FHS. His work continues to influence generations of African students, academics and researchers in the field of health sciences. The annual lecture provides space to honour his legacy and celebrate African scholarship.
Dr Thabane is the vice president of Research for St Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and St Joseph’s Health System. He is also the scientific director of The Research Institute of St Joe’s Hamilton; and was recently elected to the prestigious World Academy of Sciences. A respected biostatistician, he has made significant contributions to academic leadership and remains active in healthcare research, with over 82 000 citations as of October 2025. His long-standing commitment to rigorous, people-centred research and his support for developing scholars align strongly with Professor Mayosi’s values.
The lecture will take place as follows:
Sincerely
