Another UCT star goes from Ikeys to Boks

29 October 2025

Dear colleagues and students

The University of Cape Town (UCT) continues to make waves – a trait fitting of a top-ranked university in Africa. I am thrilled to learn that Zachary Porthen is likely to don the green and gold jersey for the first time this weekend against Japan in London.

After helping the FNB UCT Ikey Tigers lift our third FNB Varsity Cup trophy in April 2025 and playing a part in ending an 11-year wait, Porthen has been rewarded with a call-up to the senior national men’s rugby team, the Springboks, for their end of year outgoing tour.

Earlier this year, Porthen made his United Rugby Championship debut with the Stormers, just a month after he won the FNB Varsity Cup with UCT. He previously made his Currie Cup debut for Western Province in 2024, and also captained the Junior Springboks at the Under-20 Rugby Championship and the World Rugby U20 Championship, also in 2024.

His inclusion in coach Rassie Erasmus’ 36-man squad came a day before he was honoured at this year’s UCT Sports Awards, where he received his full colours. Making the Springboks team is not only a testament to his talent and hard work, but also to his discipline, resilience and the character he has built over years of quiet dedication.

At UCT, we take great pride in nurturing individuals who make an impact far beyond our campus – those who represent South Africa with integrity, brilliance and heart. Porthen’s inclusion in the Springboks' end of year touring squad reflects the holistic growth and excellence we endeavour to cultivate at UCT.

In moments like this, we are reminded that excellence is not an accident – it is the cumulative result of purpose, persistence and passion. Porthen has carried himself with humility and strength, and now stands among the best – representing not only the jersey and the team, but the dreams of many young South Africans.

Porthen has made UCT proud. May his achievement serve as a motivation for other sports stars at UCT, and I have come to learn there are many in our different sporting codes. May every athlete be motivated to go the extra mile so that, one day, they too can represent their country – the greatest honour in any athlete’s career.

On behalf of UCT, I extend our heartfelt congratulations to Porthen. We will be cheering him this weekend and beyond, knowing that he carries with him not only his own dreams, but also the hopes and pride of the entire UCT community.

Sincerely

Professor Mosa Moshabela
Vice-Chancellor
