In remembrance: Keenan Hendrickse

24 January 2024

Dear colleagues and students

It is with heavy hearts that we write to inform you of the passing of Mr Keenan Hendrickse (30), a Master of Philosophy in Sociology student. He passed away on Saturday, 25 November 2023, just a week before his 31st birthday on 1 December.

Mr Hendrickse enrolled for a Bachelor of Social Science at the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 2011. He majored in psychology and international relations. He was a very active student on campus. Apart from his studies and tutoring, Mr Hendrickse also served in student societies, and he was part of campus radio and a number of research projects. He was the human resources manager for UCT Radio between October 2021 and October 2023. He previously held the position of programming manager at the station. Remembered as a man of many hats, Mr Hendrickse was also a coordinator during the UCT SRC elections in 2018.

Fellow students, family and friends remember Mr Hendrickse as a person with a sense of humour who brought much light and life into their hearts. He had something positive to say about everyone and his love for his family, teachers, friends and neighbours was pure. A former colleague describes Mr Hendrickse as one of her favourite tutors in the department who made her laugh every day. Family friends described him as someone who loved loud, and an advocate for justice who would cross the ocean for those he loved.

Mr Hendrickse was buried on Saturday, 2 December 2023 in Bergvliet, Western Cape.

The university has reached out to offer support to the Hendrickse family and our sincere condolences go out to them and all who knew and loved him during this time of bereavement.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
