Update on Leadership Lekgotla roles

16 January 2024 | Prof Elelwani Ramugondo

Dear colleagues and students

I write to share an update on the various recruitment processes at senior management level, otherwise known as the Leadership Lekgotla, at the University of Cape Town (UCT).

Currently there are two positions that have been advertised, four that will be advertised/readvertised in the very near future, and one in which there was recently a substantive appointment made.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC): Research and Internationalisation

As announced, Professor Sue Harrison will take early retirement from UCT on 15 January 2024. As a result, at its most recent meeting on 6 December 2023 the UCT Council approved the appointment of Professor Jeff Murugan as acting DVC from 16 January to 31 July 2024 or until a substantive appointment is made – whichever comes first.

DVC: Teaching and Learning

The recruitment process is ongoing, meanwhile Emerita Professor Linda Ronnie continues to serve as acting DVC.

Chief Operating Officer (COO)

Following a discussion at the Council meeting held on 6 December 2023, this position will be advertised in due course. Mr Mughtar Parker continues to serve as acting COO.

Registrar

Mr Royston Pillay will take early retirement at the end of this year. The position of Registrar-designate has been advertised and the search and selection process has commenced.

Dean of Science

As announced, Professor Hussein Suleman has been appointed as the new Dean of Science, with effect from 1 January 2024.

Executive Director: Communication and Marketing Department

Ms Gerda Kruger has taken early retirement from UCT. Her last day in office was 31 October 2023. The recruitment process has commenced, with the selection committee being in the process of being constituted.

Executive Director: Human Resources

Council, at its meeting on 6 December 2023, resolved not to make an appointment, and to restart the search and selection process, which will now commence.

Further updates on other Leadership Lekgotla roles will be shared in due course. UCT will continue working as meticulously and expeditiously as possible in filling these crucial roles at senior management level.

Sincerely

Professor Elelwani Ramugondo
Acting Vice-Chancellor
