In remembrance: Kyle Smith

11 September 2023

Dear students and colleagues

It is with sadness that we inform you of the passing of our student, Mr Kyle Smith (25), on Saturday, 2 September 2023, following medical complications related to appendicitis.

Mr Smith, a talented bassist, was a final-year Postgraduate Diploma in Music Performance student, having graduated in 2022 with a Diploma in Music Performance.

During his studies, he was principal bass of the UCT Symphony Orchestra, UCT Symphonic Wind Ensemble and also musician of the South African National Youth Orchestra, MIAGI, the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and frequent ad hoc musician for the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. He held several tutti and principal bass positions in these orchestras and was also selected to play as a member of the German Youth Orchestra on tour in Germany.

In 2022, he appeared as soloist with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra Youth Classical Music Concert presented by the CPO and Artscape. He has been described as warm, caring, talented, cheerful and always a ray of sunshine to those close to him. His passion for music and faith in the future made him an integral part of the South African College of Music community.

Mr Smith leaves behind his mother Alison and his elder brother Keeno. His funeral took place on Saturday, 9 September 2023 in Retreat, Western Cape.

The university has reached out to offer support to the Smith family, and our heartfelt condolences go out to them and all who knew our late student.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
