In Remembrance: Barry Platen

05 September 2022

Dear colleagues and students

We are immensely sad to inform you of the passing of our colleague, Mr Barry Platen (57), on 30 August 2022.

Mr Platen was a safety, health and environmental officer in the Properties and Services department. In this role, he dedicated his life to making sure that all areas of the University of Cape Town (UCT) remained compliant.

He was one of the university’s loyal and long-serving colleagues, having joined UCT in March 1990. During these three decades, he remained dedicated to and passionate about his job.

Colleagues remember him as a gentle giant who was passionate about the health and safety of the UCT community, a trusted confidant, and a dear friend.

He is survived by his wife Deborah, and daughters Bronwyn and Stephanie.

Mr Platen will be laid to rest in a private family ceremony. The Occupational Health, Safety and Environment Department has planned a special memorial service scheduled for 6 September from 12:00 to 13:30 in the New Lecture Theatre on upper campus.

His passing will be felt dearly by the university. We have reached out to his loved ones to offer our support and condolences.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
