In remembrance: Penelope Smith-Dodge

19 April 2022

Dear colleagues and students

It is with heavy hearts that we inform you of the passing of our student, Mrs Penelope Smith-Dodge (24), on 29 March 2022 after a long illness.

She was registered for a bachelor of science degree, majoring in human anatomy and physiology, and genetics. She had completed one of her majors in 2020 and would have completed the other major in the second semester.

According to one of her lecturers, she was a resolute person who faced a number of health challenges but was determined to complete her degree. The fact that she was unwavering in pursuing her studies despite her health challenges was one of the admirable qualities most who interacted with her will remember her for.

Mrs Smith is survived by her husband Shannon, parents David and Naomi Dodge, and siblings Gordon and Catherine.

Her funeral took place on Monday, 11 April in Johannesburg.

The university has reached out to offer support to the Smith family and our sincere condolences go out to them and all who knew and loved her during this time of bereavement.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
