In remembrance: Joyce Mbexe

20 September 2021

Dear colleagues and students

It is with heavy hearts that we inform you of the passing of our colleague, Ms Joyce Mbexe (45), on Wednesday, 8 September 2021. She passed on due to COVID-19 related complications after being hospitalised for two weeks at Groote Schuur Hospital.

Ms Mbexe was a food services cook at University House kitchen. She joined the university in March 2016.

She will be remembered for her warm bright smile, positive attitude towards life and love for music. She was an energetic individual who was loved by her colleagues and friends. She didn’t believe in holding grudges and was quick to make peace and forgive people.

Colleagues said she will also be remembered for her passion and love for cooking, her compassion for students and dedication for her work. She was a kind, good-hearted and loving individual.

She is survived by her children Vuyelwa and Thando; grandchild Lwamlonke; brothers Anthony and Quqambile; and sisters Catherine and Sonia.

The university has reached out to offer support to the Mbexe family and our sincere condolences go out to them and all who knew and loved her during this time of grief.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
