In remembrance: Abdul (Taliep) Hattas

02 September 2021

Dear colleagues and students

We write with heavy hearts to convey news of the passing of Mr Abdul Mutaulib Hattas (55), fondly known as Taliep, on 25 August 2021.

Mr Hattas joined the University of Cape Town (UCT) in October 2019 as a senior finance officer in the Research Contracts and Innovation office. Prior to this, his experience was in a number of fields, including telecommunications, insurance and financial services.

He will be remembered by colleagues as a soft spoken, kind and friendly person who, despite only being part of the office for a relatively short time, will be missed dearly. His cheerful smile and positive attitude endeared him to his team and his maturity and level headedness meant conversations with him were always enjoyable.

Some members of his team referred to him as their “work dad” because of his caring nature and willingness to embrace them as his own. Mr Hattas’ team shared: “He has left a great big hole in our hearts and we will miss him terribly. In the short time he was with us, he made a great impression.”

We keep his wife Nadeema; daughters Rufqah and Rafee-ah, along with their spouses; and grandson Maahier in our thoughts as they mourn his loss.

Mr Hattas was laid to rest on 25 August 2021 in Cape Town.

The university has reached out to the Hattas family to offer our condolences and support during this difficult time. Our thoughts are with them and the many who will miss him.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
