In remembrance: Bongiwe Ndamane

03 May 2021

Dear colleagues and students

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of our colleague, Ms Bongiwe Ndamane (40) on Monday, 26 April 2021.

Ms Ndamane joined UCT in December 2005 as an administrative assistant in the Postgraduate Funding Office. In 2011 she was promoted to supervisor of the National Research Foundation (NRF) Awards portfolio, a position she held for six years until her appointment as manager of the NRF and Departmental Awards portfolio in January 2017.

Students will remember her as always being ready to assist and quick to resolve any issue while working with much diligence, commitment and passion. Nothing was too difficult nor too tiresome a task despite the wide-ranging and complex demands of her portfolio keeping her more than fully occupied.

Ms Ndamane has been described by many as a fun loving, passionate and committed individual. She took great pride in her work and expected the same of all who worked with her. She was well known across the university and interacted closely with funders such as the NRF, and a myriad of departmentally associated funders. Amongst the many acknowledgements of her excellence, she was awarded the 2018 NRF Award for excellent service as a Designated Authority, and she received a number of exceeds awards from UCT over the years.

She leaves behind her daughter Zintle; mother, Nontsapho; father, Mzwakhe; brother, Abongile; and sisters Bennedictor, Siphokazi, Andiswa and Noxolo.

Her funeral will take place on Saturday, 8 May in Cala, Eastern Cape. Details of the memorial service have not yet been finalised.

The university has reached out to the family to offer support in this time of bereavement. We extend our sincere condolences to Ms Ndamane’s family, friends, colleagues and all who knew her.

For those of you who wish to share a message of support, please feel free to contribute on the Facebook page of remembrance which has been created for her: Remembering Bongiwe Ndamane.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
