SONA road closures and other updates

13 February 2020 | Campus Announcement

Dear colleagues

This campus announcement aims to inform members of the University of Cape Town (UCT) community about:

1. SONA road closures

Parliament will host the State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Thursday, 13 February 2020. Several roads will be closed as a result, which will have an impact on the Jammie Shuttle buses that transport UCT students and staff to and from the university’s campuses.

Jammie Shuttle users can expect heavy delays (up to 45 minutes) on Thursday afternoon from 17:45 to 19:30. The Sandown and Claremont buses will be rerouted during this time to accommodate the road closures, and the Hiddingh campus buses will be delayed. Where possible, commuters are advised to take earlier buses.

2. First term underway

The first term of the UCT academic calendar got underway on Monday, 10 February 2020. The term will continue until 20 March, followed by a vacation period from 21-29 March. The UCT Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng, has wished staff and students well for the academic year.

3. Red parking bays for staff in pay classes 2 to 9

The UCT executive has agreed to convert a limited number of yellow parking bays to red parking bays for the use of staff in pay classes 2 to 9. There will be 65 bays on upper campus and 50 more spread across the other campuses. These parking bays will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested staff in pay classes 2 to 9 are asked to submit their names at the Traffic Administration Office on upper campus from Thursday, 13 February 2020. The red disc costs R1 788.

4. ICTS update: Polycom phones

UCT departments can save a significant amount of money by returning Polycom phones, which have active extensions but are not in use, to the Information and Communication Technology Services (ICTS) department.
