In remembrance: Zamikaya Jikumlambo

06 September 2019 | The UCT Executive

Dear colleagues and students

In a week when the university has already experienced deep trauma, it is with great sadness that we write to inform you of the death of Mr Zamikaya Jikumlambo (58), a laboratory assistant in the Department of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Science. Mr Jikumlambo passed away on the afternoon of Wednesday, 28 August 2019, at the Melomed Gatesville Private Hospital.

He started working at the University of Cape Town in 1996 as a departmental assistant in the Department of Botany. In 2012 he was appointed as a laboratory assistant in the Department of Zoology, now known as the Department of Biological Sciences.

Colleagues describe him as a kind-hearted, gentle, humble and loyal person who carried out his duties with diligence and much dedication to the department, and who often inconvenienced himself to accommodate others. He was loved and respected by his colleagues and students alike, especially the postgraduates who he willingly assisted even at very short notice.

Mr Jikumlambo is survived by his wife and four daughters. He will be buried on Saturday, 14 September 2019, in the Eastern Cape.

We convey our heartfelt condolences to Mr Jikumlambo’s family, friends and all who knew him.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
