The Mother City Comedy Festival promises plenty of laughs from a range of mostly local comedians.

A festival for “comedy connoisseurs” is what’s promised by the organisers of the first Mother City Comedy Festival, a new annual event which takes place at the Baxter Studio Theatre from 19 to 31 March.

The event celebrates stand-up comedy and the artists who present it, according to co-producer Siv Ngesi, who said audiences will get the chance to feast on ensemble shows, two-handers and solo offerings “sure to cater for all comedy tastes”.

“The local stand-up comedy circuit has grown at a rapid rate, which has given rise to some hilarious household names, as well as stars of film and television. A host of local stars will present new work at the festival, along with one or two surprise international guests,” he promised.

Co-producer Stuart Taylor called it a festival for “comedy connoisseurs”, saying the cast comprises predominantly South African artists, also providing a mainstream venue platform for newer artists.
