Appointment of Dean of the Faculty of Science and other updates

24 January 2019 | Campus Announcement

Dear students and colleagues

This campus announcement aims to inform members of the University of Cape Town community about:

1. Appointment of Dean of the Faculty of Science

For operational reasons, Professor Maano Ramutsindela will be starting as Dean of the Faculty of Science on 1 March 2019, not 1 July 2019 as previously communicated.

2. Student accommodation for 2019

Student accommodation on campus remains a priority for the University of Cape Town (UCT). The university’s strategy to assist with student accommodation includes offering its own residence beds as well as leasing a limited number of privately owned customised student accommodation. The university has a student population of 28 000 and the supply of beds presently amounts to approximately 27% of UCT-owned and UCT-leased beds made available to students by the university. The strategic goal is to have a bed supply of approximately one-third of the student population using 28 000 students as the population baseline.

For this academic year, UCT has leased 817 beds from private accommodation providers who offer special purpose student accommodation. UCT plans to increase its residence capacity by a further 550 beds by February 2020. Work has begun on a new residence that will be built, and the scheduled completion time is February 2020.
