Nationwide bus strike and other updates

17 April 2018 | Campus Announcement

Dear students and colleagues

This campus announcement aims to inform members of the University of Cape Town community about:

1. Nationwide bus strike

A nationwide bus strike is planned for Wednesday, 18 April 2018. While none of the issues related to the strike are linked to UCT, the Jammie Shuttle service may be affected.

At this stage, the Jammie Shuttle service is set to continue as scheduled on all routes. The university does, however, advise staff and students who use the bus service to make alternative transport arrangements to mitigate the unlikely scenario of disruptions to the service tomorrow.

Staff and students will be updated on any developments through the UCT News website and UCT Facebook and Twitter platforms.

2. Call for 2019 TB Davie Memorial Lecture nominations

The Academic Freedom Committee invites staff and students to submit nominations for the 2019 TB Davie Memorial Lecture.

The lecture was established by UCT students to commemorate the work of Thomas Benjamin Davie, who was vice-chancellor from 1948 to 1955 and a defender of the principles of academic freedom. Previous speakers include Noam Chomsky (1997), Kader Asmal (2002) and Max du Preez (2014).

The deadline for nominations is Saturday, 28 April 2018. Nominations should:

  • not exceed three pages
  • include a brief curriculum vitae of the nominated speaker
  • include a motivation for the nomination.

Nominations should be submitted by email to Dee Benjamin or posted to Room 141, Bremner Building, Lower Campus. Further details will be circulated in due course.
