Over the past few weeks, Hall 3 in UCT’s Sports Centre has been abuzz over lunchtime with staff and students working out to the sounds of aerobics music.

This is all thanks to Frans Mamabolo, one of UCT’s sports coordinators, who wanted to extend the offerings of the Sports Centre to accommodate those who are unable to make the evening aerobics sessions.

And so the new lunchtime aerobics sessions were born.

“Some staff who stay far from campus are always in a rush for public transport, hence the lunchtime workout was welcomed,” he said.

Mamabolo’s initiative started with only 10 staff members attending. Now, just a few weeks later, anywhere from 15 to 25 people are working up a sweat at the lunchtime sessions.

The classes are conducted on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 13:00 to 13:45 and are led by Siphesihle Thusi from the Fitness Centre. All are welcome – all you need to join the lunchtime exercise revolution is comfortable clothing, a towel and a water bottle.
