Nomination of IRTC Commissioners

Dear members of the UCT community

We are reaching a critical point in the process of initiating the Institutional Reconciliation and Transformation Commission (IRTC). It has taken much longer than we had hoped but that has largely been due to the need to ensure all stakeholders are involved. This has meant no progress could be made during holidays, exam periods and SRC elections. But we are now taking the next significant step.

Following a workshop in May in which the IRTC Steering Committee agreed on the terms of reference of the IRTC and the criteria for selecting commissioners, the call went out to nominate commissioners. The stakeholders had each to propose their top five candidates to submit for consideration by the rest of the steering committee. The secretariat then established the willingness of those nominated to become commissioners.

I am excited about the list that is now being made public. They represent an inspiring cross section of our society and include people who are widely known and their stature and reputations bring credibility to the IRTC. Several have experience in judicial matters, truth and reconciliation commissions, and transformation.

Their willingness to set aside time and avail their immense expertise to us is testimony to the tremendous goodwill we enjoy in society to succeed in our reconciliation and transformation project. Although only five will be appointed by Council following the recommendation of the steering committee, we are grateful to them all.

We now encourage you to indicate your views on the nominees either to your representatives (as per the steering committee contact list) or directly to the secretariat (Charmaine January) before 17:00 on 22 August. The steering committee will be meeting on 24 August in order to make the final selection of five commissioners who will be proposed to Council.

Your voice matters.

Kind Regards

Mr Sipho M Pityana

Chair of the IRTC Steering Committee
